A SECTION 5: Ar through As.

AR-558.: The location of a Dominion communications relay in the Chin’toka system that Captain Sisko and his crew helped to defend during the Dominion War; Ensign Nog was wounded by the Jem’Hadar, and lost part of his leg due to the injury. ("The Siege of AR-558" [DS9]).
Ara: Nenlar. ("No Man's Land" [Pocket VGR Gateways #5]).
ARA scan.: Autonomic Response Analysis, a medical scan used to determine the truthfulness of a subject patient. ("Ex Post Facto" [VGR #8]; "Projections" [VGR #17]; "Basics" [VGR 42&46]).
Arachnae.: Remains of an ancient supernova the Enterprise was observing when it detected the Terratin signal in 2268. ("The Terratin Incident" [TAS #15]).
arachnid.: Type of animal life form, referring to any arthropod of the class Arachnida, including spiders, mites, ticks, scorpions, palukoos and Talarian hook spiders. In 2370 Reginald Barclay was afflicted with Barclay Protomorphosis Syndrome and became mutated with arachnid gene sequences. ("Genesis" [TNG #171]).
Arak'Taral.: Jem'Hadar soldier, second to Goran'Agar. When their unit was stranded on Bopak III, Arak'Taral disapproved of Goran'Agar's plan to break their ketracel-white addiction, fearing they would become soft. Goran'Agar later killed him for disobeying orders. ("Hippocratic Oath" [DS9 #75]). Played by Stephen Davies.
Arama.: Queen of the planet Quodar. Arama is half-Vulcan and half-Quodarian, the daughter of the first Federation ambassador to that world. She was reluctant to help rescue a shuttle that crashed on neighboring Tristas, for fear of Tristan reprisal. She ruled at the time when Quodar was admitted into the Federation in 2265. ("The Final Truth" [Gold Key TOS #31]).
Arandis.: Chief facilitator for the Temtibi Lagoon on Risa. She was a good friend of Curzon Dax, whom she spent a lot of time with on his last trip there in 2367. Curzon died while making love to Arandis, which she termed 'death by jamaharon'. ("Let He Who Is Without Sin..." [DS9 #105]). Played by Vanessa Williams.
Arascuu.: One of few species known to use a certain type of compressed particle beam weapon. ("The Choice" [DC TNG vol.2 Special #2]).
Arashi, U.S.S.: Federation starship, Arbiter-class perimeter action ship, Starfleet registry NCC-1051. Built by Singapore Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. in Singapore on Terra, commissioned on 27 June 2285. The Arashi was accidentally destroyed at Makus III in February of 2286 following a collision while engaged in war games with several other vessels. (Ships of the Star Fleet, vol. 2).
Arauca, U.S.S.: Federation starship, Akyazi-class perimeter action ship, Starfleet registry NCC-1029. Built by Newport News Shipbuilding in Louisiana on Terra, commissioned on 12 August 2285. The Arauca was destroyed on stardate 8422.79 by an unknown vessel on the edge of explored space. (Ships of the Star Fleet, vol. 2).
Arawath Colony.: Cardassian settlement where Enabran Tain spent his retirement. ("The Wire" [DS9 #42]).
Araxes, U.S.S.: Federation starship, Akyazi-class perimeter action ship, Starfleet registry NCC-1030. Built by Carina Design & Construction in the Tanami Spacebridge in Australia on Terra, commissioned on 27 August 2285. Part of Perimeter Action Group 19 on Starbase 12 in the 2290s. (Ships of the Star Fleet, vol. 2).
Arban, U.S.S.: Federation starship, Arbiter-class perimeter action ship, Starfleet registry NCC-1087. Built by Temerand Duplicat in Calabay City on Mars. (Ships of the Star Fleet, vol. 2).
Arbazan.: Humanoid civilization, a member of the Federation. The Arbazan ambassador in 2369 was Taxco, who visited Deep Space 9 on a fact finding mission. Some are of the opinion that the Arbazan are a sexually repressed species, to which they take great offense. ("The Forsaken" [DS9 #17]).
Arbazon vulture.: Predatory bird whose form was taken by Odo while in the Omarion nebula in 2371. ("The Search" [DS9 #47&48]).
Arbing & Lidde Starship Construction.: Contractor of starships in the Federation. Arbing & Lidde were contracted to make many vessels of perimeter action design during the 2280s. (Ships of the Star Fleet).
arbiter.: Title of the Bajoran official in charge of judicial matters on Deep Space 9. ("Little Green Men" [DS9 #80]; "Crossfire" [DS9 #85]).
Arbiter of Succession.: Under Klingon law, the individual responsible for administering the Rite of Succession, the procedure by which a new chancellor to the Klingon High Council is chosen. K'mpec named Jean-Luc Picard as Arbiter before his death in 2367, a controversial attempt to ensure an impartial decision. Gowron was named the new chancellor, after his competitor Duras was killed in a personal combat. Picard later rejected another bid by Toral, on the basis he had fought no battles for the empire. ("Reunion" [TNG #81]; "Redemption" [TNG #100&101]).

Arbiter-class.: Type of Federation starship, classified as a perimeter action vessel. The Arbiter is a sub-class of the Akyazi design. (Ships of the Star Fleet, vol. 2).
Arbiter, U.S.S.: Federation starship, Arbiter-class perimeter action ship, Starfleet registry NCC-1048. Built by Rodriquez Ingeniera in Lima on Terra, commissioned on 9 April 2285. Part of Perimeter Action Group 20 at Star Station Yalta. (Ships of the Star Fleet, vol. 2).
arboretum.: Area on Federation starships dedicated to the study of plant life. This area serves a double function, also being a recreation area for the ship's crew to enjoy a natural environment. The flooring of this lab is covered in soil and various forms of plant life are cultivated and studied here. This was the primary workstation of civilian botanist Keiko O'Brien during her residence on the starship Enterprise-D. When that ships crew became afflicted with Barclay's Protomorphosis Syndrome in 2370 this area was where many of the ship's complement were found, their de-evolved brains having sought out a 'natural habitat' ("Data's Day" [TNG #85]; "The nth Degree" [TNG #93]; "Imaginary Friend" [TNG #122]; "Dark Page" [TNG #159]; "Genesis" [TNG #171]).
Arcadia Lake.: Location on Mars where the Vickers Shipbuilding Group has a shipyard. (Ships of the Star Fleet, vol. 2).
Arcadia III.: Planet which is more commonly known by the name 'Motherlode.' ("Mudd's Passion" [TAS #8]).
Arcadia VI.: Planet, where the starship Enterprise-E responded to a disaster call from in 2374, treating dozens of children for radiation poisoning before delivering them to Deep Space 7. ("Q-Space" [Pocket TNG #47]).
arch.: Inner doorway in holodeck entrances which can be used to adjust controls or interface with the ship's computer while still running a holo-scenario. The arch can be concealed in order to completely contain the holodeck, although it becomes visible on command. ("Elementary, Dear Data" [TNG #29]).
archaeology.: The study of ancient civilizations and life-forms. On Federation starships archaeological studies are the province of the A&A officer. Some of the Federation's most famous archaeologists were Roger Korby, who specialized in ancient medicine; T'Sara, who found the legendary Ko N'ya; and Richard Galen, who discovered the origins of humanoid life in our portion of the galaxy. Jean-Luc Picard is an accomplished student of archaeology. ("What Are Little Girls Made Of?" [TOS #9]; "Who Mourns for Adonais?" [TOS #33]; "Turnabout Intruder" [TOS #79]; "Contagion" [TNG #37]; "The Chase" [TNG #146]; "The Devil's Heart" [Pocket TNG HC #3]).
Archaidae sector.: Area of space. ("The First Virtue" [Pocket TNG #56]).
Archanis.: Star, which was used by Sulu as a navigation reference when the Enterprise was thrown across space by the Metrons. This system was conquered by the Klingons in 2373 ("Arena" [TOS #19])
Archanis IV.: Planet where Klingons assaulted a research outpost in the 2260s. They had an ancient claim to this world, which they relinquished in 2272. A century later this planet was home to a Federation installation, but was conquered by the Klingons in 2373 . ("Day of the Dove" [TOS #66]; "Broken Link" [DS9 #98]).
Archanis sector.: Area of space that is home to several Federation starbases and military installations. In 2372, Chancellor Gowron of the Klingon Empire demanded the Federation withdraw from the Archanis sector, which was conquered by the Klingons soon after. ("Apocalypse Rising" [DS9 #99]; "Nor the Battle to the Strong" [DS9 #102]).
Archaria III.: Planet colonized jointly by humans and Peladians in the twenty-second century. The human population of this planet thrives on agriculture. This world was settled by religious zealots and remains a throwback to centuries old human values, and has not yet become a full member of the Federation. One distressing quality present in those humans is racism against those whose ancestry has become mixed with other species. In 2364 Archaria was struck by a tailored version of the Rhulian flu which was designed to attack those of mixed blood. The virus escaped attempted containments by breaking down into a series of three prions, sub-viral components, which could violate biofilters and force-fields, then recombine to become the infection. Tens of thousands of Archaria's population of hybrids were killed before a fourth prion was replicated which rendered the virus dormant by doctors from the starships Enterprise-D and Constitution. The disease was planted by Solomon, an agent of the Orion Syndicate who worked for a man known as the General. ("Infection" [Pocket TNG #51]; "Red Sector" [Pocket TNG #53]).
Archer.: Crewman on the starship Enterprise. ("Dreams of the Raven" [Pocket TOS #34]).
Archer, Jonathan.: Captain of Enterprise. Archer was the son of Henry Archer, one of the colleagues of Zefram Cochrane that helped make the warp-5 drive successful. In honor of his father, who never got to see his work realized, Archer proudly commanded the first Earth craft equipped with warp-5, the NX-01 Enterprise. ("Broken Bow" [ENT #1], et al.). Played by Scott Bakula.
Archer, Henry.: Scientist at the Warp-5 Complex. Archer was the father of Jonathan Archer. ("Broken Bow" [ENT #1]).
Archer, Valerie.: Starfleet officer, rank of commander, who served at Starfleet Headquarters in 2375. Archer's parents were both Starfleet officers. A recreation of Archer was part of a training facility for Species 8472, who were planning to use operatives to infiltrate Terra in 2375. The 8472 individual who impersonated Archer was briefly involved with Commander Chakotay when the starship Voyager discovered their Terra simulation in the Delta Quadrant. ("In the Flesh" [VGR #98]). Played by Kate Vernon.
Archer, U.S.S.: Federation starship, Arbiter-class perimeter action ship, Starfleet registry NCC-1069. Built by Seskon Trella's Starcraft Design Division in Chagala on Tellar. (Ships of the Star Fleet, vol. 2).
Archer, U.S.S.: Federation starship, Starfleet registry NCC-44278. In 2378 the Archer was part of Battle Group Omega, an expeditionary force detailed to participate in possible conflicts resulting from an uprising in the Romulan heartworlds. ("Nemesis" [Movie #10]). The Archer's registry number is derived from background graphics from the movie "Nemesis."
Archer IV.: The destination of the Enterprise-D before its encounter with the time rift caused by the Enterprise-C in an alternate timeline. In that timeline, Archer IV was where the Klingons suffered a defeat against the Federation. ("Yesterday's Enterprise" [TNG #63]). Possibly discovered by and/or named for the captain?
archon.: Title for a Cardassian judicial official. ("Tribunal" [DS9 #45]).
Archon, U.S.S.: Federation starship, Daedalus-class cruiser, Starfleet registry NCC-189. An early Starfleet craft that vanished near Beta III in 2167, after being forced from its orbit by the Landru computer. The Archon's crew were assimilated into Beta Ill's Body population. ("The Return of the Archons" [TOS #22]). The Archon's class desigfnation and registry were devised by Michael Okuda for the Star trek Encyclopedia.
Archons.: After being absorbed by Beta III society, the Federation crew of the U.S.S. Archon were known as 'Archons'. Like the rest of the inhabitants, they were controlled by the computer Landru, resulting in a placid yet uncreative society that curtailed their individualism. ("The Return of the Archons" [TOS #22]).

Arco-class.: Type of attack sled docked aboard Constitution-class starships. ("Dreadnought!" [Pocket TOS #29]).
Arcos, U.S.S.: Federation starship, Deneva-class transport, Starfleet registry NCC-6237. This cargo ship exploded in 2367 after an antimatter containment breach of the warp drive. The crew were able to escape to the planet Turkana IV, where they became prisoners of the Alliance faction. ("Legacy" [TNG #80]).
arctic spider.: ("Rise" [VGR #60]).
Arcturan hongua.: Liquor used by Dermot Cusack when mixing the drink he named the Kaylar Kalamity. ("Our Dearest Blood" [Marvel EV #3]).
Arcturans.: Humanoid species, that has an unspecified use of cloning in their reproduction process. Arcturan privateers, not known for their tendency to cooperate with others, were among the forces that attacked Starbase 13 in 2254 over the dilithium deposits on Pharos. ("The Motion Picture" [TMP #1]; "The Fires of Pharos" [Marvel EV #2]; "Metamorphosis" [Pocket TNG Giant #1]).
Arcturian fizz.: Libation capable of intensifying arousal and gratification. Lwaxana Troi offered to mix one for DaiMon Tog whilst held captive on his ship. ("Ménage à Troi" [TNG #72]).
Arcturian yoga.: ("Death Count" [Pocket TOS #62]).
Arcturus, U.S.S.: Federation starship, Starfleet registry NCC-1807. Built by Starfleet in the Sosma Docks of Kuha Keihasalm on Arcturus III.; (Technical Manual [TOS]; Ships of the Star Fleet).
Arcturus III.: Planet in the Arcturus system. (Ships of the Star Fleet).
Arcybite.: Planet in the Clarus System on which the Ferengi Nava took control of the refineries, resulting in his receiving kudos from Grand Nagus Zek in 2369. ("The Nagus" [DS9 #11]).
Ardana.: Member of the Federation, this Class-M planet is where the Enterprise went to receive a delivery of zenite in 2269. The shipment was held up by a conflict between the wealthy residents of Stratos and the workers. ("The Cloud Minders" [TOS #74]).
Ardana, U.S.S.: Federation starship, Surya-class frigate, Starfleet registry NCC-1868. The Ardana was refit to the Miranda-class. Named for the Federation member planet. (Ships of the Star Fleet).
Ardanans.: ("The Cloud Minders" [TOS #74]).
Ardent, U.S.S.: Federation starship, Surya-class frigate, Starfleet registry NCC-1886. (Ships of the Star Fleet).
Ardra.: The Enterprise-D crew met the fake Ardra again on the planet Shanzibar, where she was attempting to gain access to that planet's treasury by marrying the aging monarch there. She was instrumental in revealing another plot to kill him by his senior ministers. ("Devil's Due" [TNG #87]; "Shore Leave in Shanzibar" [DC TNG vol.2 #36]; "Consorting With the Devil" [DC TNG #37]; "Dirty Work" [DC TNG vol.2 #38]). Played by Marta DuBois.
Arekkieh, I.K.S.: Klingon battleship, K't'inga-class battlecruiser. ("Epic Proportions" [DC TOS vol.2 #52]).
Ares.: Planet in the Gamma Quadrant near the Bajoran wormhole terminus, home of the Aresian species. ("Acceptable Losses" [Malibu DS9 #24]; "Gods of War" [Malibu DS9 #25]).
Ares, U.S.S.: Federation starship, Siva-class destroyer, Starfleet registry NCC-524. (Technical Manual [TOS]).
Aresians.: Humanoid species in the Gamma Quadrant. ("Acceptable Losses" [Malibu DS9 #24]; "Gods of War" [Malibu DS9 #25]).
Arethian flu.: ("Eye of the Needle" [VGR #7]).
Arex.: Starfleet command officer. Arex formerly was assigned as navigator aboard the starship Enterprise. He is an Edoan, with three legs, three arms, and three fingers on each hand, and a reddish complexion. In an emergency, he can operate the helm-navigation console by himself. Arex's people are long lived, and Arex knew from the very beginning that he wished to spend his long life in space. Before he entered Starfleet as a technician, he spent ten years in the merchant marine. Arex is not a graduate of the Academy. He worked his way up through the enlisted ranks and became an officer via a field commission during a battle with the Klingons and the small cruiser aboard which he was serving. All the officers were killed in the fray, and Arex took command to effect a temporary retreat and then a return action which took the Klingon ship by surprise and allowed Arex to disable them to be brought in to face Federation charges. Arex has no brothers or sisters. Arex's family line can be traced for three thousand years. Aboard ship, Arex often keeps to himself. However, sometimes he can be pursuaded to play a flute-like instrument called a sessica. Arex also can be pursuaded to display a special proficiency in sleight-of-hand, a trick he picked up while in the merchant marine. Arex is entitled to wear three decorations for bravery and has a Starfleet Citation for Conspicuous Valor. After his tour of duty on the Enterprise, Arex reached the rank of commander and was serving at Starfleet Headquarters during the early 2280s. He later returned to serve on the starship Enterprise-A for a brief period of time. ("Time for Yesterday" [Pocket TOS]).
Argala.: Planet. ("Displaced" [VGR #66]).
Argana, U.S.S.: Federation starship, Moscow-class scout, Starfleet registry NCC-60001. Built at the Vannis Shipyards on Marcos XII. (FASA Officer's Manual [TNG]).
Argaya.: Star syatem. ("Lower Decks" [TNG #167]).
Argelian massage facility.: ("The Die is Cast" [DS9 #67]).
Argelians.: Humanoid species, the inhabitants of Argelius II. ("Wolf in the Fold" [TOS #36]).
Argelius II.: Planet in the Ciatella system whose location makes it a strategically important spaceport. Argelius II is home to a humanoid culture that is peaceful, hedonistic, and known for its hospitality. In 2371, while on shore leave on Argelius II, Lieutenant Burgoyne met legendary engineer Captain Montgomery Scott. The two talked and Scott introduced Burgoyne to real Scots whiskey, which Burgoyne continues to favor. ("Wolf in the Fold" [TOS #36]; "Relics" [TNG #130]; "The Klingon Gambit" [Pocket TOS #3]; "Battlestations!" [Pocket TOS #31]; "Dreams of the Raven" [Pocket TOS #34]; "The Two-Front War" [Pocket NF #3]; "Double or Nothing" [Pocket TNG #55]).
argine.: ("The Nagus" [DS9 #11]).
Argo.: Shuttle used aboard the starship Enterprise-E. The Argo is a large carrier used to transport heavy equipment to a planet's surface. In 2378 it was used to transport a ground vehicle that was to be used by Picard, Worf and Data to the surface of a planet. ("Nemesis" [Movie #10]).
Argolis Cluster.: ("I, Borg" [TNG #123]; "True-Q" [TNG #132]; "Behind the Lines" [DS9 #128]; "The Reckoning" [DS9 #145]).
Argon, Robert: Colonel, the director of the United States' Security control division in 1975. Colonel Argon was in command of the failed attempts to decode transmissions accidentally stored in a receiver computer by a transmission from a time-tossed starship several years earlier. (Technical Manual [TOS]).
argonite.: ("Doctor Bashir, I Presume" [DS9 #114]).
Argons.: ("The Argon Affair" [DC TOS #38]).
Argos.: ("Silicon Avatar" [TNG #104]).
Argosian sector.: ("Babel" [DS9 #5]).
Argosians.: ("Dax" [DS9 #8]).
Argratha.: ("Hard Time" [DS9 #91])
Argrathi.: ("Hard Time" [DS9 #91]).
Argus.: Nasgul. In 2287 Argus defied the will of his people's religious leader, the false Salla Vlagro. As a result he was pursued into space trying to escape his world's punishment. He requested sanctuary aboard the starship Enterprise-A, but expired after the Salla pronunced that he should die. His rescue on the part of Captain James Kirk ignited a small diplomatic incident between the Federation and the Salla's puppet government. ("The Return!" [DC TOS vol.2 #1]).
Argus Array.: ("The nth Degree" [TNG #93]; "Parallels" [TNG #163]).
Argus River.: ("Wolf in the Fold" [TOS #36]).
Argus sector.: ("Gambit" [TNG #156&157]).
Argus, U.S.S.: Federation starship, Surya-class frigate. (Ships of the Star Fleet).
Argus, U.S.S.: Federation starship, Arbiter-class perimeter action ship, Starfleet registry NCC-1078. Second starship to bear the name, Built at Puget Sound on Terra. (Ships of the Star Fleet, vol. 2).
Argyle, Terence.: Chief engineer of the starship Enterprise-D in the year 2364. Argyle transferred to the starship Repulse on stardate 42073.; In an alternate universe where the Enterprise-D failed to defeat the Borg, Argyle had remained on that vessel, but was lost during an assault on the assimilated planet Terra. ("Where No One Has Gone Before" [TNG #6]; "Datalore" [TNG #14]; "Metamorphosis" [Pocket TNG Giant #1]; "Vendetta" [Pocket TNG Giant #2]; "Q's Day" [DC TNG #4]; "Here Today" [DC TNG #6]; "And Death Shall Have No Dominion" [DC TNG vol.2 #50]). Played by Biff Yeager. Argyle's first name, Terence, is from his comic book appearances and not from canon sources.
Ari.: ("Second Skin" [DS9 #51]). Played by Billy Burke.
Ari, U.S.S.: Federation starship, Starfleet registry NCC-1723. Built on stardate 8174.91 at Alfras Naval Yards on Deneb V. The Ari was later refit by Newport News Shipbuilding in Virginia on Terra. (Technical Manual [TOS]; Ships of the Star Fleet).
Ariadne-class.: Type of Federation starship in use in the 22nd and 23rd centuries. The Ariadne was designed as a clipper. (Ships of the Star Fleet [Todd Guenther]; Federation Starship Recognition Chart [Aridas Sofia]). This vessel is only featured as a recognition silhouette on the FSR Chart by Aridas Sofia, no details about its design or construction are known. The NCC codes on the chart indicate there could have been approximately 125 of this class built, with the registries ranging from NCC-206 to NCC-332, although I will consider this apocryphal in light of the fact that these registries might be better applied to different vessels. The design of this vessel looks quite odd.. the sideview silhouette doesn't do it justice, as it becomes unclear whether we are looking at a tall cylindrical shape or possibly a 'ring ship' resembling the S.S. Enterprise XCV-330 and several other vessels of Vulcan design.
Ariadne, U.S.S.: Federation starship, class ship of the Ariadne-class clipper, Starfleet registry NCC-206. In Greek mythology, Ariadne was the daughter of King Minos who fell in love with Theseus. (Ships of the Star Fleet [Todd Guenther]; Federation Starship Recognition Chart [Aridas Sofia]). Ariadne's help made it possible for Theseus to slay the Minotaur and survive the Labyrinth. She fell in love with Theseus at first sight, as he disembarked from the ship bearing him to his intended sacrifice, and gave him the clew, or ball of thread, that kept him from getting lost in the Minotaur's maze. But Theseus abandoned Ariadne on an island after his escape from Crete.
Ariana.: ("Haven" [TNG #5]). Played by Danitza Kingsley.
Ariannus.: ("Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" [TOS #70]).
Arias Expedition.: ("Caretaker" [VGR #1&2]; "Mosaic" [Pocket VGR HC #1]).
Arided, U.S.S.: Federation starship, Starfleet registry NCC-1831. Built by Avondale Group at New Dallas on Rigel IV. (Technical Manual [TOS]).
Ariel.: ("Angel One" [TNG #15]). Played by Patricia McPherson.

Ariel-class.: Type of Federation starship, classified as a shuttlecarrier. (Ships of the Star Fleet).
Ariel, U.S.S.: Federation starship, a survey vessel. ("Eye of the Beholder" [TAS]).
Ariel, U.S.S.: Federation starship, Ariel-class shuttlecarrier, Starfleet registry NCC-2200. Second starship to bear the name. (Ships of the Star Fleet).

Aries, U.S.S.: Federation starship, Renaissance-class heavy cruiser, Starfleet registry NCC-45167. Second starship to bear the name. In 2378 the Aries was part of Battle Group Omega, an expeditionary force detailed to participate in possible conflicts resulting from an uprising in the Romulan heartworlds. ("The Icarus Factor" [TNG #40]; "Identity Crisis" [TNG #92]; "Friends and Other Strangers" [DC TNG vol.2 #67]; "Nemesis" [Movie #10]). The Aries's registry number was included in background graphics from the movie "Nemesis."
Arissa.: ("A Simple Investigation" [DS9 #115]). Played by Dey Young, who also appeared as Hannah Bates in "The Masterpiece Society" [TNG #113].

Arkathi, Sinimar.: Todanian. ("No Man's Land" [Pocket VGR Gateways #5]).
Arkinson.: Lieutenant on the starship Voyager. ("One Small Step" [VGR]).
Arla Rees.: Bajoran Starfleet officer. Commander Arla was assigned to Deep Space Nine in 2374 as preparation for an assignment as second in command to the newly constructed Farpoint Station. Arla became the Bajoran-Federation cultural liaison on Deep Space Nine as practice for her upcoming duties helping the Bandi and Starfleet contingents of Farpoint's staff work together. ("The Fall of Terok Nor" [Pocket DS9 Millennium #1]).
Arlin, Lysia.: ("Shadowplay" [DS9 #36]).
Armens, Treaty of.: ("The Ensigns of Command" [TNG #49]).
armor.: Technology from the 25th century which almost instantly creates an ablative armor matrix around a starship hull from a series of small replicator outcroppings. The specifications for this technology was given to the crew of the starship Voyager in 2377 by a time traveler from the year 2404, and was instrumental in their defeat of the Borg Queen that allowed them to use the Borg transwarp network to return home.("Endgame" [VGR]).
armory.: ("Day of the Dove" [TOS #66]; "11001001" [TNG #16]).
Armstrong, James.: Captain of the U.S.S. Jenolen in 2295. Armstrong and everyone aboard except for Montgomery Scott and Matt Franklin died when it crashed into a Dyson sphere that year. Early in his career, Armstrong had been an ensign on the starship Potemkin. ("Relics" [Pocket TNG Tie-in]).
Armstrong, Lake.: ("First Contact" [Movie #8]).
Armstrong, Neil.: First human to walk on Earth's moon, on July 20, 1969. ("Threshold" [VGR #32]).
Armstrong, Ran: Starfleet admiral, former commander of the starship Constellation. Admiral Armstrong was, in the 2260s, the Starfleet representative to the Federation Council. He was also, according to computer readouts, implicated as being placed in that position in order to be answerable to the ambitious Vice-Admiral Vaughan Rittenhouse, and his attempted coup. ("Dreadnought!" [Pocket TOS #29]).
Armstrong Park.: ("Image in the Sand" [DS9 #151]).
Armstrong, U.S.S.: Federation starship, cutter type vessel. Named for Neil Armstrong. Armstrong was one of the ships to welcome the Enterprise back to the galaxy after the Inversion Drive test run. ("The Wounded Sky" [Pocket TOS #13]). The time period of Duane's novels is sometimes unclear, but would seem to indicate this vessel existed in or around the time of the five-year mission depicted in TOS.
Armstrong, U.S.S.: Federation starship, a dreadnought type vessel in the mid to late 23rd century. This ship had a complement was over 500 crewpeople, and was armed with six phaser emplacements and eight launch tubes. (Begin Tactical Starship Simulator [Clockwork Software]). The game was timed around the TOS five-year mission, it is unclear what class this vessel is represents. It could not represent the vessel mentioned in "The Wounded Sky" [Pocket TOS #13] since that was specified as a small cutter type vessel.
Armstrong, U.S.S.: Federation starship, Miranda-class heavy frigate, Starfleet registry NCC-1784. In an alternate timeline, this vessel was involved in a series of altercations involving Admiral Kirk and invaders from a version of the mirror universe. ("Masquerade!" [DC TOS #13]). The registry NCC-1784 was visible on the ship's hull. According to the Star Fleet Technical Manual [Franz Joseph], this registry was originally assigned to the starship Kasimar, of the Achernar-class. The manual Ships of the Star Fleet [Mastercom] later stated that the construction of that ship was canceled. However, it seems odd that a Miranda-class ship would have such a low registry number.
Armstrong, U.S.S.: Federation starship. Commander Saavik served as this vessel's first officer in 2344. ("Vulcan's Heart" [Pocket TOS HC #14]). This novel takes place in the time period between the Star Trek movies and the beginning of the Next Generation era, however, it is not clear what type of ship this was, it could possibly be the same Miranda-class Armstrong from the movie era, or one of the conflicting Armstrongs from the TNG era, or perhaps neither but instead an intermediate ship
Armstrong, U.S.S.: Federation starship, Oberth-class scout, Starfleet registry NCC-19212. Commanded by Captain Johnson. In 2369, the Armstrong visited planets in the Gamma Quadrant on an archaeological mission led by Dr. Josiah Wembley. Dr. Wembley died of natural causes aboard this vessel during the course of the mission. ("Stowaway" [Malibu DS9 #1&2]). The Armstrong's registry was readable from the drawings in the comic.
Armstrong, U.S.S.: Federation starship, Challenger-class exploratory cruiser, Starfleet registry NCC-57537. In 2373 the Armstrong was ambushed by a Klingon battle group and docked at Deep Space 9 to receive medical aid. ("Apocalypse Rising" [DS9 #99]). Since there was a previous Armstrong as late as 2369, It seems odd that a ship with a low registry and of a possibly older class would be brought into service after 2370, pending some other explanation.
Armus.: Lone inhabitant of the planet Vagra II. ("Skin of Evil" [TNG #22]).
Armus IX.: Planet once visited by William Riker. For diplomatic reasons, Riker had to wear a feathered costume when he visited this world. An Iconian gateway opened on this planet in 2377, and introduced an undetermined substance or lifeform that caused a medical crisis. ("Angel One" [TNG #15]; "Demons of Air and Darkness" [Pocket DS9 Gateways]).

Arons.: Bajoran deputy in Odo's security force on DS9 in 2371. ("Friend and Foe Alike" [Malibu DS9 #28]).

artificial wormhole.: ("Rejoined" [DS9 #78]).
Artim.: Ba'ku boy. ("Insurrection" [Movie #9]).
Arton, Jeff.: ("In Theory" [TNG #99]).
Artonian laser.: ("The Vengeance Factor" [TNG #57]).
arva nodes.: ("Captive Pursuit" [DS9 #6]).
Arvada III.: ("The Arsenal of Freedom" [TNG #21]).
Arvaga.: Inhabited planet, that was once at war with Delta Veylos in the 2220s. Ambassador Sarek of the Vulcan Diplomatic Corps was called in to assist in mediating the dispute. During his visit to Arvaga, Sarek discovered the plight of the Ketirans, who had immigrated to that world and were living in scattered groups throughout the Alpha Quadrant. He befirended Lar'Tok, the leader of the Arvagan Ketirans and helped her obtain Federation assistance in finding other groups of her people and settling a new planet, New Ketira. ("Homeworld" [DC TOS vol.2 Annual #3]).
Asanjian, Barbara.: Terran colonist, an inhabitant of Beta Trilochus IV. ("To Walk the Night" [DC TOS vol.2 Annual #4]).

Ascension-class.: Type of Federation starship, classified as a dreadnought. The Ascension-class is a three nacelled variant of the Decatur and Belknap classes of starship, and was first conceived of in the 2270s. In comparison to the similarly styled Federation-class, the Ascension is much more maneuverable, with a lower tonnage and internal volume but with similar power and energy systems, although Ascension lacks the Federation-class' ability to deploy large amounts of embarked craft and act as a through deck cruiser or shuttlecarrier. Aschelan V.: Planet, location of a Cardassian weapons depot located adjacent to the Badlands. ("Dreadnought" [VGR #34]).
Asenzi.: Assistant chief medical officer on the Enterprise-D as of its first mission in 2364. Asenzi arrived on the bridge in order to treat Lieutenant Torres, who had been frozen by Q. ("Encounter at Farpoint" [Pocket TNG Adaptation]).
Ashanti-class.: Type of Federation starship in the 2290s, classified as a heavy cruiser. (Ships of the Star Fleet).

Asmund, Gerda.: Navigator of the U.S.S. Stargazer under Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Along with her twin sister Idun, Gerda was rescued by a Klingon captain from the wreckage of the colony on Alpha Zion. She was raised on Qo'noS by a Klingon family. While on board the Stargazer, she attempted to kill Ensign Morgen with a Klingon plant called ironroot. She was captured, and tried to commit suicide, but was saved and sent to trial for her crime. She was found guilty of attempted murder and remanded to the rehabilitation colony on Anjelica VII. She spent eleven years there, and was then released. Gerda died while working on a freighter bound for Alpha Palemon. The ship passed through a meteor storm and it's shield failed, killing her and seven others in the cargo hold. ("Reunion" [Pocket TNG HC #1]; "The First Virtue" [Pocket TNG #56]).
Asmund, Idun.: Helmswoman of the Stargazer under Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Along with her twin sister Gerda, Idun was rescued by a Klingon captain from the wreckage of the colony on Alpha Zion. She was raised on Qo'noS by a Klingon family. After the Stargazer was lost at Maxia Zeta, she went on to become the first officer of the Charleston. When the crew of Stargazer reunited in 2367 for the coronation of Morgen, another former shipmate, Asmund was accused of attempts on the lives of her fellow officers, but the real culprit was the mad Dr. Carter Greyhorse, seeking revenge for the death of his lover, Idun's sister Gerda. ("Reunion" [Pocket TNG HC #1]; "The First Virtue" [Pocket TNG #56]).

astrometric readings.: ("Future's End" [VGR #50&51]).
astronomical unit.: Measure of length in space, equal to the distance between Sol and Terra.
Astrun, Edam.: Starfleet officer. As a cadet, Astrun was a member of the controversial cadet group Omega Squadron. ("Passages" [Marvel SA #6]).; In a possible future timeline, Astrun is a Starfleet captain by the year 2393.
