Planet, the site of a diplomatic conference in 2369. Captain Picard was prevented from being a mediator here due to his investigation into the death of Richard Galen. ("The Chase" [TNG #146]).

atavachron.
Time travel device developed by the Sarpeidon. The atavachron enabled the populace of Sarpeidon to travel into the past of their world to escape the explosion of their home star, Beta Niobe, in 2269. The device's method of altering a user's cellular composition had the liability of making return time travel virtually impossible. ("All Our Yesterdays" [TOS #78]).

Atkins, Doris.
Yeoman on the starship Enterprise in 2266. Yeoman Atkins was on landing party details when that vessel visited the Horatius star system. ("The Deadly Years" [TOS]; "Mission to Horatius" [TOS Novel]).
Atlantica, U.S.S.
Federation scout vessel that was the first assignment of Uhura following her Academy graduation. (Conjecture). I believe this piece of information is derived from a comment in one of the Best of Trek magazine compilations. Since nothing is known about Uhura's past, I include it here to fill out her history even though I cant nail down the source.
Atlas, S.S.
Terran space vessel that was destroyed by the Romulans in the 2150s. The unprovoked attacks on this and other vessels was the impetus for the declaration of an interstallar war between the two powers. (Star Fleet Intelligence--Agent's Orientation Sourcebook [FASA RPG]).
Atlantis Project.
Earth-based plan to construct an artificial eighth continent in the planet's Atlantic Ocean in the late 24th century, named for a legendary ancient land. Despite the participation of a childhood friend, Captain Jean-Luc Picard declined appointment to the post of the project director in order to remain in command of the U.S.S. Enterprise-D. ("Family" [TNG #78]).
atmosphere conditioning pumps.
Essential component in the life-support systems of United Federation of Planets starships that ensures that the onboard mix of oxygen and other particles is breathable. In 2367, Data was able to override several safety interlocks and reverse the pumps' function while reset by the homing signal of Dr. Noonien Soong. ("Brothers" [TNG #77]).
atmospheric dissipation.
("Homeward" [TNG #165]).
Atol.
Thallonian soldier who served aboard the science vessel Kayven Ryin. In 2373, just before the runabout Marquand was destroyed, Lieutenant Zak Kebron and Si Cwan beamed aboard the Kayven Ryin. Atol and a fellow guard, Skarm, attempted to capture them but were killed in the attempt. ("The Two-Front War" [Pocket NF #3]).
atomic bomb.

Atoz.
Curator of the Sarpeidon library, and the last resident to leave the planet during its home star's explosion. In connection with the atavachron time-travel device, the library was used by the inhabitants to choose the era from the past to which they wished to relocate. ("All Our Yesterdays" [TOS #78]). Played by Ian Wolfe.

Augustus, U.S.S.
In an alternate future timeline, a Federation starship of destroyer specifications, commanded by Captain T'len. The Augustus was one of the starships involved in the combat observed by the starship Defiant when it was thrown 25 years into its own future. The Augustus and another Starfleet vessel were combating the U.S.S. Opaka, a Bajoran Ascendancy starship. The Augustus attempted to rescue the Defiant's crew from the Ascendancy, beaming several on board before the Ascendancy starship Boreth captured the vessel itself. Australopithecine.
Primitive humanoid that lived on Earth 3 to 5 million years ago In 2370. Commander William Riker was injected with Barclays' protomorphosis Syndrome and devolved into an Australopithecine protohuman. ("Genesis" [TNG #171]).
Autarch.
Leader of the Tzenkethi homeworld in the year 2371. ("The Adversary" [DS9 #72]). SEE ALSO: Ilari autarch.

auto-phaser interlock.
Computer subroutine that allows for precise timing in the firing of ship mounted phasers. ("A Matter of Time" [TNG #109]).
autodestruct.
Computer program on modern starships which enables the complete automated destruction of the vessel should it fall into enemy hands. The sequence requires dermal handprint identification or verbal identification of the most senior officers aboard the ship, and initiates a preset sequence specified by the user. ("Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" [TOS #70]; "The Search for Spock" [Movie #3]; "First Contact" [Movie #8]; "11001001" [TNG #16]; "Where Silence Has Lease" [TNG #28]; "The Adversary" [DS9 #72]; "Deadlock" [VGR #37]; "Basics" [VGR 42&46]).

Auxiliary Control.
Secondary command facility on Constitution-class starships, located on deck 7 within the sickbay complex, that allowed operation of basic functions such as helm and navigation if the bridge should be disabled. Also known as Emergency Manual Monitor. Federation starship, Belknap-class strike cruiser, Starfleet registry NCC-2543. Built by Starfleet at the Cameron Naval Facility on Deneb V, commissioned on stardate 8280.2. (Ships of the Star Fleet).
Avenger-class.
Type of Federation starship, a heavy frigate, built in the late 23rd century. The Avenger-class was similar in construction and armament to the Miranda-class frigates and the Siva-class destroyers. (Ships of the Star Fleet [Mastercom]). Since the Avenger-class depicted in the Ships of the Star Feet text is now named the Miranda-class, I used this unused Reliant pre-production sketch as the design for the class which bears this name. It is unclear if any other ships of the so-called Avenger-class could have been built as these or if they were built to the Miranda specifications.

In June 2286 the Avenger, along with the starship Alacrity, partipated in the Balikatan war game exercise, defeating the cruisers El Dorado and Farragut by a substantial margin. Planet in the Delta Quadrant where the Vidiians had an underground complex. Dr. Sulan killed Lieutenant Durst and performed experiments on B'Elanna Torres here. ("Faces" [VGR #14]).

away mission.
Any task or venture that necessitates separating a squad of Federation crewmembers, known as an away team from their starship. Such missions, which usually involve transport to a potentially hostile planetary surface or spacecraft, are often hazardous and are thus intended to be brief. ("Encounter at Farpoint" [TNG #1&2]).
away team.
The squad of Starfleet crewmembers that are assigned to conduct an away mission. The size and configuration of the team is contingent upon the specific nature of the mission. The term refers to both 'landing parties' and 'boarding parties'. SEE ALSO: landing party. ("Encounter at Farpoint" [TNG #1&2]).
Axaanivus Celesco Starcraft.
Corporation that contracts to build Starfleet vessels, based on the Bedi Plains of Alpha Centauri V. (Ships of the Star Fleet, vol. 2).
Axanar.
Homeworld of the Axanari, who were first contacted in 2151 by Enterprise NX-01. Axanar was the site of a famous Federation triumph during a 23rd century battle, in which Starfleet Captain Garth prevailed. James Kirk held Garth in high esteem crediting the victory with helping to hold together the Federation. Ensign Kirk also visited this world a few years later, distinguishing himself in maintaining the peace of this world, and recieved the Palm Leaf of Axanar award. ("Fight or Flight" [ENT #3]; "Whom Gods Destroy" [TOS #71]; "Republic" [Pocket TOS #85]; "Enterprise: The First Adventure" [Pocket Giant #1]).

Inhabitants of Axanar. ("Fight or Flight" [ENT #3]; "Republic" [Pocket TOS #85]).

Component of an exocomp's neural computers. ("The Quality of Life" [TNG #135]).
axonal amplifier.

Ay-nab.
("The Starless World" [Bantam TOS]).
Ayala.
Former Maquis member from Chakotay's Liberty that was given a temporary Starfleet commission as lieutenant aboard the starship Voyager. Ayala was beamed aboard Voyager's bridge with Chakotay and Tuvok shortly after the Liberty was brought to the Caretaker's array. Ayala often served as backup at the tactical or ops stations on the bridge, or as a guard on security teams or at the brig. Ayala was one of the crewpeople selected to participate in a diversionary attack on the Hanon IV natives because of his running skills in 2373. In an alternate timeline, Ayala was one of the security officers assaulted by Kes when she returned to Voyager in 2376. At some point Ayala began to wear a command uniform and man the helm also. ("Initiations" [VGR]; "Twisted" [VGR]).
Ayelborne.
Leader of the Council of Elders on Organia who welcomed representatives of both the Federation and the Klingon Empire to Organia in 2266. He ignored strong warnings from Federation representative James Kirk that Klingon occupation would have disastrous consequences to the technologically unsophisticated Organians. It was later learned that the Organians were an incredibly advanced race of noncorporeal life-forms who had been masquerading in human form to make it easier for the Federation and Klingon representatives to deal with them. Ayelborne predicted that the Federation and Klingon antagonists would become fast friends. (Errand of Mercy" [TOS #27]).

Yeoman on the starship Enterprise under the command of Captain Kirk. ("The Survivor" [Log #2 #1]).
Ayre, Kristian.
Conn of the starship Enterprise-E following the 2373 death of Lt. Hawk. ("House of Cards" [Pocket NF #1]).
Ayvon.
Historic Bajoran freedom fighter, known as "Ayvon of the Seven." Many of his quoted words are now famous sayings on Bajor. ("The Siege" [Pocket DS9 #2]).
Azark.
Thevosian scientist in charge of the failed protomatter stream weapons project in the late 23rd century. ("The Peacekeeper" [DC TOS vol.2 #49&50]).
Azetbur.
Daughter of Klingon chancellor Gorkon, Azetbur ascended to lead the High Council after the assassination of her father in 2293. As chancellor, Azetbur continued his peace initiative with the Federation, concluding the historic Khitomer accords. ("The Undiscovered Country" [Movie #6]). Played by Rosana DeSoto.

Aziza.
Provisional governor of Nelkar. Aziza was a dour and downbeat man who took over after Governor Celter was killed in office. Aziza opened arms to the Thallonian refugees from the Cambon who had been held hostage by Laheera and Celter. ("End Game" [Pocket NF #4]).
azna.
When steamed, the favorite food of Dax, who told Sisko it would put years on his life. ("A Man Alone" [DS9 #3]).
Azrael, U.S.S.
Federation starship, Saladin-class destroyer, Starfleet registry NCC-517. The Azrael was authorized for construction on stardate 0965, and commissioned on 12 October 2237. (Technical Manual [TOS]). The 2237 date is from an extrapolation based on an incorrect year date given in the Federation Reference Series.
Azure Nebula.
Gaseous anomaly located on the Klingon-Federation Border in the Beta Quadrant, a class-11 nebula that contains trace amounts of sirillium. In 2293 when attempting to mount a rescue of Kirk and McCoy, Captain Sulu ordered the starship Excelsior through the nebula towards Qo'noS, but was stopped by Captain Kang. ("Flashback" [VGR #45]).
Azurians.
Race friendly to the Federation. The starship Essahir took part in joint exercises with Azurian vessels starting December 21, 2288. (Ships of the Star Fleet).
Azusa, U.S.S.
Federation starship, an Arbiter-type variant of an Akyazi-class perimeter action ship, Starfleet registry NCC-1074. Construction of this vessel began on stardate 8475.90 by Temerand Duplicat in Calabay City on Mars. (Ships of the Star Fleet, vol. 2 [Mastercom]).
