I-Chaya.: The pet sehlat of Spock when he was a child. Resembling a Terran teddy bear, except with fangs, I-Chaya was Spock's constant companion as a youth. ("Yesteryear" [TAS #3]).
"I Hate You.": Punk rock song released in 1986 on Terra. ("The Voyage Home" [Movie #4]).
"I, the Jury.": Novel published in 1947 on Terra, the first in a series of stories by Mickey Spillane about a fictitious detective named Mike Hammer. Miles O'Brien recommended it to Odo. ("Profit and Loss" [DS9 #38]).
Iadara.: Federation colony. In an alternate timeline, Iadara was being covertly observed by the Cardassians through the hijacked Argus Array. ("Parallels" [TNG #163]).
Ian Shelton.: Shuttlecraft on the Enterprise in 2366. The Ian Shelton was lost in the phenomena TNC 65156 with Zefram Cochrane and the energy being known as the Companion on board, to be retrieved 100 years later by the starships Gauvreau and Enterprise-D. ("Federation" [Pocket TOS HC #8]).
Ian Shelton, S.S.: Starship owned and operated by Anne Gauvreau. ("Prime Directive" [Pocket TOS HC #4]).
Ianni.: ("A Rock and a Hard Place" [Pocket TNG #10]).
Iaron.: Capital city of the planet Damiano. The inaugural celebration of that planet's new governor in this city was attended by the starship Enterprise-D in 2371. ("To Take Arms Against a Sea of Troubles" [WS TNG Perchance to Dream #1]; "By a Sleep to Say We End" [WS TNG Perchance to Dream #2]).
Iavo.: Romulan, sentinel to the Empress. ("Red Sector" [Pocket TNG #53]).
Iblis, U.S.S.: Federation starship, Siva-class destroyer, Starfleet registry NCC-528. (Technical Manual [TOS])
Iborites.: Humanoid species. ("Childish Things" [DC TNG vol.2 #45]).

Idelson.: In the mirror universe, engineering officer on the I.S.S. Enterprise. When Spock took command from Kirk, Idelson attempted to challenge Spock's authority, and was thus eliminated by Ensign Chekov. ("Fragile Glass" [Marvel Mirror, Mirror #1]).
IDIC.: IDIC. Acronym for Infinite Diversity in Infinte Combinations, a cornerstone of Vulcan philosophy. ("Is There In Truth No Beauty?" [TOS #62]; "The Jem'Hadar" [DS9 #46]; "The Andorian Incident" [ENT]).
Idini cluster.: ("Too Short a Season" [TNG #12]).
Idran.: ("Emissary" [DS9 #1&2]; "Battle Lines" [DS9 #13]; "The Jem'Hadar" [DS9 #46]).
Idran hybrids.: ("The Assignment" [DS9 #104]).

Ikeya, Carmen.: Captain of the starship Constellation when it was destroyed by the Archernar collapse. ("Time for Yesterday" [Pocket TOS #39]).
I.K.S.: Abbreviation for Imperial Klingon Ship, title used for Klingon battleships, for example the I.K.S. Amar. Some translations have the prefix include the type of vessel, such as IKC for Imperial Klingon Cruisers and IKF for fighters. ("The Motion Picture" [Movie #1]; "Trials and Tribble-ations" [DS9 #103]).
Ilia.: ("The Motion Picture" [Movie #1]). Played by Persis Khambatta.
Illinois.: Province of North America on Terra that was home to Daniels. Daniels said it wasn't the same Illinois that people from the 22nd century knew. ("Cold Front" [ENT]).
Illyan.: Language formerly spoken by the population of ancient Damiano. It is no longer commonly known, but was spoken fluently by Data. ("In the Sleep of Death, What Dreams May Come" [WS TNG Perchance to Dream #3]).
Ilyria.: ("Vulcan's Glory" [Pocket TOS #44]; "Eclipse of Reason" [Marvel TOS #12]).
Imlach.: ("Trapped" [DC TNG vol.2 #22]; "The Barrier" [DC TNG vol.2 #23]; "Homecoming" [DC TNG vol.2 #24]).
immunocytic gel worms.: Type of small worms that Phlox kept in sickbay for medical purposes. ("Broken Bow" [ENT #1&2]).
imperatrix.: ("The Broken Moon" [DC TNG vol.2 Annual #3]).
Imperial Senate.: SEE: Romulan Imperial Senate.
imzadi.: Betazoid term. ("Encounter at Farpoint" [TNG]; "Imzadi" [Pocket TNG HC]).
Inaieu.: Ancient High King of Deneb V. Songs depicts her as she "rose up and smote her enemies." ("My Enemy, My Ally" [Pocket TOS #18]).
Inaieu, U.S.S.: Federation starship, Defender-class heavy destroyer, Starfleet registry NCC-2003. Commanded by Captain Nhauris Rihaul. Named for the old High King Inaieu of Deneb V. ("The Wounded Sky" [Pocket TOS #13]; "My Enemy, My Ally" [Pocket TOS #18]).
inaprovaline.: Cardiostimulatory pharmaceutical in use by Starfleet personnel. Dr. Phlox used inaprovaline to help purge the toxin from the bodies of the landing party on an unknown M-class planet. It could also be used to ease symptoms such as high blood pressure. ("Strange New World" [ENT]; "Fusion" [ENT]).
Independence, U.S.S.: Federation starship, a cruiser type vessel in the mid to late 23rd century. The Independence had four banks of phaser emitters and six launch tubes. This vessel's complement was almost 400 crewpeople. (Begin Tactical Starship Simulator [Clockwork Software]).
Indiana.: Terran province on the continent of North America. ("Mosaic" [Pocket VGR HC #1]; "Macrocosm" [VGR #54]).
infernite.: Material. ("In the Hands of the Prophets" [DS9 #20]).
infirmary.: ("Emissary" [DS9 #1&2]).
Ingav.: Planet conquered by the Cardassian Union shortly before the Bajoran Occupation. After the Dominion War, Ingav became a Federation protectorate. ("Abyss" [Pocket DS9 Section 31).
Ingavi.: Humanoid primate-like sentient race found on Sindorin. After the Cardassians occupied Ingav, a ship of Ingavi escaped, but crashed on Sindorin. They used only the basics of technology to survive, feeling a spiritual connection to the planet. During her time with the Maquis, Ro Laren encountered the Ingavi, and befriended them. ("Abyss" [Pocket DS9 Section 31).
Ingraham.: Colonist on Omicron Theta. Dr. Ingraham was a space navy enthusiast, and knew the registry numbers of most of Starfleet in 2338. This knowledge was stored in Data's neural nets, along with the files of every other colonist on that world. ("Mystery of the Missing Crew" [Pocket TNG SA #6]).
Inshai.: Homeworld of the Inshai Compact that was destroyed when it's sun, Sigma 1014 Orionis went nova about 2300 years ago. ("Spock's World" [Pocket TOS HC #1]).
Inshai Compact.: Historians' name for an interstellar government that was in power some 5000 years ago, a federation of approximately 36 hominid and non-hominid cultures. The Compact fell when a world of the Orion Congeries allegedly placed a sunkiller bomb into Sigma 1014 Orionis, homestar of Inshai. ("Spock's World" [Pocket TOS HC #1]).
insignia.: SEE: Insignia section.
intermix formula.: ("The Motion Picture" [Movie #1]).
Interspecies Medical Exchange.: Program initiated by the Vulcans for different species to learn about other worlds. Dr. Phlox was a part of the exchange, being assigned to study on Earth and later, aboard Enterprise NX-01. Dr. Jeremy Lucas became involved in the program by going to study on Denobula. ("Broken Bow" [ENT]; "Dear Doctor" [ENT]).; Intrepid.; Terran starship that was in operation in the year 2353. The Intrepid was commanded by Captain Ramirez and was instrumental in fighting off Klingon attackers who attempted to destroy the starship Enterprise when it returned to the Sol system in that year ("The Expanse" [ENT]). The Inttrpid's name was mentioned in dialogue, but it is not clear which of the three ships it was. In all

Intrepid-class.: Type of Federation starship, a small but powerful class of medium size cruiser first built in the early 2370s. The Intrepid-class contains a number of advancements over previous starship designs including a continuum safe warp engine. It also features revolutionary new bio-neural computer components which facilitate faster data transmission by using gel-packs of living cells in the computer circuitry.15 decks in height, the Intrepid-class carries a crew complement of about 150 and has a sustainable cruising velocity of about warp factor 9.975. Ships of this class include the Intrepid, Voyager, Sagan, Bellerephon, Pathfinder and Stargazer. ("Caretaker" [VGR #1&2]).

Intrepid, U.S.S.: Federation starship, Constitution-class heavy cruiser, Starfleet registry NCC-1631. The first Intrepid was a starship crewed entirely by Vulcans, and made first contact with the Tholians in the 2240s under the command of Captain Spiak. Tyler Garth served aboard this ship after graduation from Starfleet Academy. The Intrepid was being repaired in section 18 at Starbase 11 before the ion storm-damaged Enterprise was given repair priority on stardate 2947. The Intrepid was later destroyed with all hands by a large spaceborne amoeba entity near the Gamma 7A system. ("Court Martial" [TOS #14]; "The Immunity Syndrome" [TOS #48]; Worlds of the Federation [TNG]; "Judgment Rites" [Interplay TOS]; Federation Starship Recognition Manual [FASA RPG]).
Intrepid-A, U.S.S.: Federation starship, Constitution-class heavy cruiser, Starfleet registry NCC-1831. Second starship to bear the name, commanded by Captain Suvuk. A replacement for the original Intrepid, the Intrepid-A's construction was delayed when its warp nacelles were diverted to be fitted onto the extremely damaged Enterprise at Talin. The Intrepid received new nacelles, and was one of the first vessels uprated to Enterprise-class specifications. In 2269 the Intrepid, crewed entirely by Vulcans, was hijacked near the Romulan Neutral Zone in an artificial ion storm created by the Romulans. Its crew was subjected to several experiments designed to enhance the atrophied Romulan mental powers. A task force of the starships Enterprise, Inaieu and Constellation-A later saved the ship and the surviving crew. ("My Enemy, My Ally" [Pocket TOS #18]; "Prime Directive" [Pocket TOS HC #4]). The text of the novel identified this vessel as NCC-1631, the same registry as the Intrepid destroyed at Gamma 7A. The alternate registry NCC-1831, which is listed in some Paramount sources as the Intrepid's registry, seems to fit better.
Intrepid, U.S.S.: Federation starship, Oberth-class scout. Third starship to bear the name, commanded by Captain Spock. On it's initial shakedown cruise, the Intrepid was crewed by a number of veterans of the decommissioned Enterprise-A, including Captain Spock, Commander Uhura and Dr. McCoy. One of the scout ship Intrepid's first missions was aid to the Federation relief effort on Obsidian, where the crew was successful in revealing Romulan sabotage to Federation interests there. ("Vulcan's Forge" [Pocket TOS HC #12]).
Intrepid, U.S.S.: Federation starship, Excelsior-class explorer, Starfleet registry NCC-38907. The fourth starship to bear the name, the Excelsior-class Intrepid was the first ship to respond to the Romulan attack on the Klingon outpost of Khitomer in the mid-24th century. Chief Petty Officer Sergey Rozhenko, a warp field specialist, found a small Klingon boy, Worf, in the wreckage and adopted him as a son. Another survivor, Kahlest, was taken to Starbase 24 for treatment by the Intrepid and returned to the Klingon Empire. The chief engineer of the Intrepid in 2369 was Commander Donald Kaplan. ("Sins of the Father" [TNG #65]; "Family" [TNG #78]).
Intrepid, U.S.S.: Federation starship, Intrepid-class cruiser, Starfleet registry NCC-74600. Commanded by Captain Terrence Riley, the Intrepid responded when Captain Montgomery Scott commandeered the museum starship Yorktown from the Fleet museum in 2371, but was unable to stop the theft. By 2376 the Intrepid was commanded by Captain Walter Emick. In that year the vessel served as part of the evacuation convoy for Europa Nova when that world was struck by a massive theta irradiate waste field. In 2378 the Intrepid was part of Battle Group Omega, an expeditionary force detailed to participate in possible conflicts resulting from an uprising in the Romulan heartworlds. ("Nemesis" [Movie #10]; "Crossover" [Pocket TNG HC #6]; "Demons of Air and Darkness" [Pocket DS9 Gateways]). The Michael Jan Friedman novel "Crossover" identified the Intrepid as a Galaxy-class starship. This just doesn't work, in between the old Intrepid and the new Intrepid, and the fact that there are too many Galaxys to begin with. The Intrepid's registry number is derived from background graphics from the movie "Nemesis."
Inversion Drive.: ("The Wounded Sky" [Pocket TOS #13]).
invocation of renewal.: Prayer cited when The Great Plume of Agosoria bursts. Phlox spoke the prayer aboard the Enterprise. ("Cold Front" [ENT]).
Ioh.: Continent on the Skedan homeworld. ("Seven of Nine" [Pocket VGR #16]).
ion matrix.: Subsystem of the Xyrillian ship's engines that Commander Tucker of Enterprise helped repair. ("Unexpected" [ENT]).
ion storm.: A disruptive space phenomenon characterized by intense bombardment of charged particles. An ion storm was along the trajectory of the Enterprise NX-01 after leaving Qo'noS in 2151. The Kantare ship, in command of Captain Kuulan, was hit by an ion storm, causing the ship to crash land. ("Court Martial" [TOS #14]; "Broken Bow" [ENT]; "Oasis" [ENT]).
Iowa.: Terran province on the continent of North America. ("Final Frontier" [Pocket TOS Giant #3]).
IP.: Abbreviation. SEE: interphase.
iridium.: Element that is rare on the planet Terra. Traces of iridium in ancient rock indicate a giant asteroid collided with the planet millions of years ago, killing off much of the world's life. In galactic trade within the Federation, iridium from mines on Belmara IV is refined on Atalun. ("First Frontier" [Pocket TOS #75]; "The Argon Affair" [DC TOS #38]).
Irimlo Si.: Space vessel that participated in the 2260s Great Starship Race, a Zeon starship commanded by Loracon. ("The Great Starship Race" [Pocket TOS #67]).
Iroquois.: Space vessel that took part in the Belle Terre expedition in the 2270s, a commercial industrial carrier commanded by Captain Israel. ("Wagon Train to the Stars" [Pocket New Earth #1]).
Ishikawajima Harima Industries.: Contractor of starships based in Yokohama on Terra. (Ships of the Star Fleet; Ships of the Star Fleet, vol. 2).
Ishimaki.: Captain of the U.S.S. Zapata in 2372. ("Saratoga" [Pocket DS9 #18]).
Ishka.: Mother to Quark. ("Family Business" [DS9 #69]).
isolinear rod.: ("Past Prologue" [DS9 #4]; "The Forsaken" [DS9 #17]; "Shadowplay" [DS9 #36]).
isomiotic hypo: ("Preemptive Strike" [TNG #176]).
isonucleic residue: ("Fair Trade" [VGR #56]).
isoton.: Unit of mass used by the Federation. ("The Ship" [DS9 #100]).
isotropic resraint.: ("Phage" [VGR #5]).
I.S.S.: Abbreviation for Imperial Star Ship, title used for Terran Empire battleships in the mirror universe, for example the I.S.S. Enterprise. ("Mirror, Mirror" [TOS #39]).
Itamish III.: Planet. ("The Jem'Hadar" [DS9 #46]).
Ithahulan.: Ancient city ruin on Algol II. ("Futures" [Marvel EV #12-14]).
Itytek.: ("Chainmail" [Pocket Gateways #2]).
Iudka.: Humanoid species native to the Beta Quadrant, near sector 48472. The Iudka were formerly conquerors, pillaging nearby civilizations, like the Nenlar, for supplies and resources. The current Iudka leadership have moved away from these practices, but many scars remain from their former crimes. In 2376 the Iudka vessel Nivvika was displaced to the Delta Quadrant through an Iconian gateway opened by the Petraw. The ship briefly traveled in the company of the starship Voyager. ("No Man's Land" [Pocket VGR Gateways #5]).
Ivan, U.S.S.: Federation starship, Cochise-class destroyer, Starfleet registry NCC-550. (Technical Manual [TOS]).
Ivers, Carey N.: ("Cloak" [Pocket TOS Section 31]).
Iverson's disease.: Degenerative muscular disorder. ("Too Short a Season" [TNG #12]; "Q-Space" [Pocket TNG #47]; "Q-Zone" [Pocket TNG #48]; "Q-Strike" [Pocket TNG #49]).
Ivor Prime.: Federation colony that was destroyed by a Borg assimilation cube in 2373. Deep Space 5 was the first Starfleet outpost to discover Ivor's destruction. ("First Contact" [Movie #8]).
Iyaar.: Planet, home of the Iyaarans. Captain Picard was due to spend time here as part of a cultural exchange program in 2370. ("Liaisons" [TNG #154]).
Iyaaran shuttle.: Spacecraft used by Iyaaran diplomatic personnel. Piloted by Ambassador Voval, this vessel crashed while carrying Jean-Luc Picard to Iyaar in 2370, stranding the two. ("Liaisons" [TNG #154]).
Iyaarans.: Humanoid civilization from Iyaar. The Iyaarans had their first diplomatic cultural exchange with the Federation in 2370. This species reproduces by post-cellular compounding, emerging full-grown from natal pods. Iyaaran food is bland, as they regard consumption of food for sustenance only. Therfore, Iyaarans do not understand the concepts of pleasure, antagonism or love. During the cultural exchange three ambassadors, Voval; Byleth and Loquel, were assigned to investigate each of these concepts. ("Liaisons" [TNG #154]).
Iyal.: Spacegoing species. In 2376 an Iyal vessel was displaced to the Delta Quadrant through an Iconian gateway opened by the Petraw. The ship briefly traveled in the company of the starship Voyager. ("No Man's Land" [Pocket VGR Gateways #5]).
Izar.: Federation colony in the Epsilon Bootis star system, most notably known as the homeworld of famous Starfleet hero Garth. This planet is home of an office of Starfleet Intelligence Sector One. ("Whom Gods Destroy" [TOS]; Star Fleet Intelligence--Agent's Orientation Sourcebook [FASA RPG]).
Izell.: Fifth-magnitude giant blue-white star with an intense gravitational pull. Izell has ten uninhabited planets and is ten million kilometers in diameter. In 2269 while testing warp powered shields, the starship Enterprise inadvertently created a cosmic string in Izell's accretion disc, creating a time warp. ("First Frontier" [Pocket TOS #75]).
