N SECTION 1: N through Ne.

nacelle.
Outboard structure on starships which house the warp coils, the elements which warp subspace to provide the ability to travel faster than the speed of light. Nacelles are usually separated from the main structure of the ship because of the continuum distortion which can take place around them, when at optimal levels, could be deleterious to the safety of ship and crew. ("Eye of the Beholder" [TNG #170]).
Nacene.
Extragalactic species. ("Caretaker" [VGR]; "Cold Fire" [VGR]).
Nada Chun.
Spacecraft. ("Dujonian's Hoard" [Pocket Captain's Table #2]).
Nano.
Communications officer on ths starship Enterprise under the command of Christopher Pike. Nano is a Lirin off of the planet Liria, and as such commands pyrokinetic abilities. ("Flesh of My Flesh" [Marvel EV #1], et al.; "One of a Kind" [Marvel EV #9]).
Nagilum.
Extradimensional entity who took it upon himself to examine the crew of the starship Enterprise-D in early 2365. Nagilum wished to determine how they reacted to their mortality. The Enterprise escaped when Captain Picard vowed to destroy his own vessel rather than let a third of his crew be cut down. ("Where Silence Has Lease" [TNG]).
Nagurski.
Starfleet engineer. ("Wet Behind the Ears" [DC TNG vol.2 #32]).
naiskos.
SEE: Kurlan naiskos. ("The Chase" [TNG]).
Nalan Bal.
Command officer in the Bajoran militia. An astrophysicist, he almost came to blows with a new-born Jem'Hadar on DS9 in 2371. ("The Abandoned" [DS9]).
Napeans.
Humanoid species with prominent lobed extensions on their forward skulls. The Napeans are members of the Federation but take little interest in the rest of the galaxy. Napeans have an innate empathic and telepathic capacity. ("Eye of the Beholder" [TNG]).
Narra.
Suliban girl. ("Detained" [ENT]). Played by Jessica D. Stone.
Nartktos IV.
Planet located in the far reaches of Federation space in the Crytokts system. This planet is known as a source of illegal barbit crystals, which occur naturally in the surface of the planet. ("Rest & Recreation" [DC TOS vol.2 #18]).
NASA.
National Aeronautics and Space Administration, a branch of the United States government on Terra that ws responsible for many of that planets breakthroughs in the field of space exploration and expliotation for human good in the 20th and 21st centuries. NASA suffered great cutbacks before and during the Eugenics Wars in the 1990s, and suffered again with the onset of World War III in the 2150s. After the U.S. secessions, NASA was largely dismantled. ("The Motion Picture" [Movie #1]).
Nasgul.
Humanoid species characterized by yellow skin, black eyes and prominent facial bone structure. The Nasgul species is led by a religious leader known as the Salla, In the 2280s that position was unjustly held by Vlagro, who led his people into several holy conflicts. SEE: Salla. ("The Return!" [DC TOS vol.2 #1], et al.).
Nash, Roy
("Dreadnought!" [Pocket TOS #29]).
Natira.
High priestess of the Fabrini people on the Yonada asteroid. ("For the World Is Hollow" [TOS]).
Nausicaans.
Tall, surly, ill-tempered humanoids from an unknown planet in deep space. Nausicaans are generally very inhospitable with vaguely lizardlike faces and have attacked people with little provokation.("Fortunate Son" [ENT]; "Tapestry" [TNG #141]; "The Enemy of My Enemy" [Marvel TNG Riker Special #1]).
Navdaq.
("The Final Fury" [Pocket VGR #9]).
NCC-1404.
Registry of a Federation starship with an elongated flat hull rearward of the saucer. (The Art of Star Trek). A pre-production study model of one of the Excelsior design concepts unbelievably labeled "U.S.S. Alkaselsior" bore this registry, perhaps it could represent a canon design of this registry with a less ridiculous name.
NCC-7100.
Registry of a Federation starship, Constellation-class exploratory cruiser. A model of this vessel was on display in the ready room of Captain Picard aboard the starship Enterprise-D. ("Who Watches the Watchers?" [TNG]). Most people assume that the model, painted yellow, in Picard's ready room represents the Stargazer, his former command, however it bears a different registry (most likely arrived at by rearranging the decals of an Enterprise NCC-1701 decal sheet). There could be several resons why Picard has a memento of a ship that wasn't his former command.
NCC-63646.
Registry of a Federation starship, Akira-class heavy cruiser that was present at the 2373 Borg incursion of the Sol system. ("First Contact" [Movie #7]). The vessel's name was not revealed in the movie or the script.
NCC-71325.
Registry of a Federation starship that carried Tom Paris to the starship Voyager in 2371. ("Caretaker" [VGR #1&2]). The ship's name was not visible, but the shuttle was labeled with this registry, of a ship other than Voyager.
NCC-73918.
Registry of a Federation runabout, Danube-class, that was used by Major Kira, Elim Garak, and Damar in their mission to secure a Breen energy dissipating weapon. ("Tacking Into the Wind" [DS9]). The runabout's name was not revealed in the episode or the script.
NCC-75227.
Registry of a Federation scoutship, Talon-class, that was the Lt. Cmdr. Data's transport when he visited the Federation observation site on the Ba'ku planet in 2374. ("Insurrection" [Movie #9]). Starfleet tradition would seem to indicate that any vessel with an NCC registry have a proper name, yet this vessel has no visible nomenclature. Perhaps it was labeled to finely to be seen. The ship's class name is derived from the Last Unicorn Games RPG sourcebooks.
Ndele, U.S.S.
Federation starship proposed during the 23rd century. This vessel's construction was cancelled, and it's registry was assigned to another vessel. (Technical Manual [Franz Joseph TOS]; Ships of the Star Fleet [Mastercom]). It's possible ships of these names were still built, of different classes and registry numbers. If built, this ship would have been Achernar-class, with the registry NCC-1758, according to the manuals.
Nebula-class.
Type of Federation starship, classified as a heavy cruiser. The Nebula-class was developed in the 2350s as an offshoot of the Galaxy-class design. More compact than the Galaxy, the Nebula class is a versatile starship used for scientific missions, but still posessing superior firepower. The upper platform is interchangeable and can house an array of sensor, weaponry or small craft support systems. Ships of this type include the Phoenix, Farragut, and presumably, the Nebula.
Nebula, U.S.S.
Federation starship, Nebula-class heavy cruiser. First starship of its type. (Conjecture).
Nechayev, Alynna.
Starfleet admiral. Admiral Nechayev is one of the main players at Starfleet command, taking point on the Cardassian treaty negotaiations in the mid 2360s, notorious for the territory annexes which led to mass relocations and the splintering of Maquis groups along the Demilitarized Zone she created. Nechayev also found herself in command of missions dealing with Borg rebel invasions and Dominion reconnaissance in 2370. ("Chain of Command" [TNG #136&137]; "Descent" [TNG #152&153]; "Journey's End" [TNG #172]; "The Search" [DS9 #47&48]; "Spectre" [Pocket TOS HC #13]; "Time's Enemy" [Pocket DS9 #16]; "House of Cards" [Pocket NF #1]; "The Enemy of My Enemy" [Marvel TNG Riker Special #1]). Played by Natalija Nogulich.
Neela.
Bajoran militia engineering assistant on DS9. Attempted to assassinate Vedek Bareil when he made an unscheduled visit to the station in 2369. Thought to be working for an extremist religious group, she was captured and tried but would not reveal the names of others involved in the attempt. ("Hands of the Prophets" [DS9]). Played by Robin Christopher.
Neelix.
A Talaxian, crewmember of the starship Voyager. Neelix signed aboard that vessel offering his services as guide when Voyager became trapped in the Delta Quadrant in 2371. ("Caretaker" [VGR #1&2], et al.).
Neil.
("Dreams of the Raven" [Pocket TOS #34]).
Nelkar.
Class-M planet in sector 221-G of Federation space, home to the physically beautiful but morally corrupt Nelkarite civilization. ("The Two-Front War" [Pocket NF #3]; "End Game" [Pocket NF #4]).
Nelkarite ship.
Large black starship with silver markings used by Laheera in 2373. The vessel boasted front and rear mounted phased plasma cannons. ("The Two-Front War" [Pocket NF #3]; "End Game" [Pocket NF #4]).
Nelkarites.
Technologically sophisticated species of sentient humanoids, of which Celter and Laheera were members. Nelkarites are a race of scavengers, their technology and architecture was a hodgepodge of many styles. They were often lazy and unmotivated, they piggybacked on accomplishments of others. They appeared angelically beautiful, were hairless, had golden skin, distended brows and their eyes had a purple sheen. Nelkar was their homeworld. ("The Two-Front War" [Pocket NF #3]; "End Game" [Pocket NF #4]).
Neeley ( Sarah McDonnell ) - Terran Female. Starfleet Lieutenant. Security officer stranded with Sisko on the dark matter planet. [Rocks and Shoals]
Nema - Trill Female. Daughter of Audred Dax. [Nor the Battle]
Niles ( Michael Rose ) - Terran Male. Maquis operative. Captured by Starfleet during the aborted raid on the Brimar colony. [Maquis II]
Nahsk ( Cyril O'Reilly ) - Male. Brother of Krit. Not very smart. One of the gang that carried out the Lisseppian Mother's Day heist. Arrested on Deep Space Nine after the apparent death of Morn. [Who Mourns for Morn?]
Nelson.
("Dreams of the Raven" [Pocket TOS #34]).
Nelson-class
Type of Federation starship built in the mid-23rd century, classified as a scout. The Nelson-class was designed to supplement the capabilities of the older Hermes-class, and was constructed from the spaceframe of a planned Cochise-class vessel. When first commissioned, these scouts were at the forefront of Federation technology. Ships of this class include the Nelson, Providence, Brazzaville, Sager, Moisanen and Manzer. (Federation Ship Recognition Manual [FASA RPG]; Star Fleet Technical Manual [Franz Joseph Designs]). The FASA sourcebook pictured this vessel, a variant of the Franz Joseph Saladin design with two connecting struts to the nacelle rather than one. The graphic in the book also had an odd detail, the lack of the attractor coils of the Bussard collector's forward nacelle cap. I have assumed this modification is actually part of the ships structure in my graphic. However, I did alter the design to include an outboard deflector dish like its sister ships in the Saladin and Hermes-classes.
Nelson, U.S.S.
Federation starship, prototype of the Nelson-class scout, Starfleet registry NCC-546. This vessel was planned to be constructed as a Cochise-class destroyer, authorized by a Starfleet appropriation of stardate 4699. This vessel was later decided to be constructed as the prototype of a new type of scouts, an advanced technology model designed to supplement the aging technologies of the Hermes-class and related types of vessels. ("Flesh of My Flesh" [Marvel EV #1]; "The Fallen" [Marvel EV #10&11]).
Nelson, U.S.S.
Federation starship, a dreadnought type vessel in the mid to late 23rd century. This ship had a complement was over 500 crewpeople, and was armed with six phaser emplacements and eight launch tubes. ("Flesh of My Flesh" [Marvel EV #1]; "The Fallen" [Marvel EV #10&11]; Begin Tactical Starship Simulator [Clockwork Software]). The Early Voyages comic depicted the Nelson as a saucer with four warp nacelles attached to it, partially fitting the composition of a possible dreadnought design, so I have concluded that it might represent the ship from the Begin game.
Nenlars.
("No Man's Land" [Pocket VGR Gateways #5]).
Nereid.
Moon in the Sol system. ("Cloak" [Pocket TOS Section 31]).
Nessen 71A.
(Ships of the Star Fleet, vol.1).
neural inhibitor manacles.
Special restraints that take neural energy sent to the restrained appendage and channel it back as raw energy. Zak Kebron broke these virtually unbreakable neural inhibitor manacles while he was held in a dungeon on Thallon in 2373. ("Endgame" [Pocket NF #4])
neural surger.
("Renegade" [DC TOS vol.2 #51]).
New Canberra.
City on Aldebaran. The starship Sovereign visited here in 2289. (Ships of the Star Fleet, vol.1).
New Ketira.
Planet colonized by the Ketiran people. ("Homeworld" [DC TOS vol.2 Annual #3]).
New Milan.
("Flesh of My Flesh" [Marvel EV #1]; "The Fallen" [Marvel EV #10&11]).
New Orleans-class starship
New Orleans-class.
Type of Federation starship in use in the late 24th century measuring approximately 350 meters in length, classified as a frigate. This class includes the starships Renegade NCC-63102; Thomas Paine NCC-65530; Kyushu NCC-65491; Rutledge NCC-57295 and, presumably, the New Orleans. ("Conspiracy" [TNG]; "The Best of Both Worlds" [TNG]). The New Orleans class was mentioned in "Conspiracy" and not shown, and was later built as a damaged filming model for the Wolf 359 battle scene. The ship was made with pieces of a AMT/ERTL Galaxy-class model, with the windows and bridge modified to make it appear to be half the size of that ship. The New Orleans illustration is courtesy of Ex Astris Scientia. Please visit their New Orleans-class Analysis for more information on the real model.
New Orleans, U.S.S.
Federation starship, prototype for the New Orleans-class frigate. (Conjecture). I recognize the 'City of New Orleans' comment in the Encyclopedia was an in-joke and not the real name of the ship the class was named for. I hope.
New Pride of Baltimore.
Space vessel that participated in the 2260s Great Starship Race, an American starship commanded by Miles Glover X. ("The Great Starship Race" [Pocket TOS #67]).
New United Nations.
International government formed in the first half of the 21st century on the planet Terra. By the year 2079 international strife had caused this incarnation of world leadership to be abolished. ("Encounter at Farpoint" [TNG #1&2]).
New Venice.
("Flesh of My Flesh" [Marvel EV #1]).
Neyda Prime.
("Immortal Wounds" [Marvel EV #8]).
Neydans.
("Immortal Wounds" [Marvel EV #8]).
