Sulu, Hikaru Sato.
Commanding officer of the starship Excelsior. Prior to receiving his command in 2290, Sulu had served on the Enterprise under Captain Kirk since 2264. Born in San Francisco, Sulu spent some of his early years on Ganjitsu, during the period where that planet underwent Klingon pirate raids. After their defeat by Captain Hunter's Aerfen squadron, Sulu wanted to go to Starfleet Academy to serve on a fighter. After graduation he was instead assigned to the starship Enterprise as astrophysicist in 2264, working his way up to chief helmsman. He was promoted to lieutenant commander in 2270 following the completion of the Enterprise's five year mission, and was  later reassigned to that ship when it was recommissioned in 2271. ("Where No Man Has Gone Before" [TOS #1]; "The Motion Picture" [Movie #1]). Played by George Takei.

A forerunner of runabout-type vessels, this class carries a crew of thirty-six. The Jenolen, lost in 2294, was Sydney-class, as was the ship that carried Argin and Bashir to DS9 in 2370 and the ship that took Lucsly and Dulmer there in 2373.
