for smuggling contraband. ("Fair Trade" [VGR #56]).
-
Über-race.
-
Name given by historical theory
to the powerful, star-spanning civilization that began to deposit criminals,
unsavory individuals and political exiles on the planet Thallon several
thousand years ago. At the time, the planet was believed to be a cold,
infertile world. These people were sent to Thallon in large space arks,
and were not expected to survive. The planet proved very fertile due to
a store of pure energy within the planet from the Great Bird of the Galaxy.

Many sightings of spacecraft were classified as UFOs during Terra's 20th
and 21st centuries, such as the sighting of the Enterprise in 1969
observed by air force planes or the 24th century Ferengi shuttle Quark's
Treasure that crashed in the city of Roswell in 1947. With the advent
of home video recording, many images of such craft were recorded, and while
some are regarded as hoaxes, there is video footage of the time-displaced
24th century starship Voyager over the city of Los Angeles in 1996.

Uhnari,
Aquiel.
-
Haliian communications technician
in Starfleet, formerly assigned to Relay Station 47. Uhnari served nine
months on the station beginning in 2368, but was transferred after a tragic
incident in which Kieth Rocha, her fellow officer on the station, was discovered
to have been killed and replaced by a coalescent organism. In her time
on Relay Station 47, Uhnari missed her homeworld of Halii very much. She
enjoys reading gothic fiction and had a pet dog named Maura. During the
investigation into Rocha's death, Uhnari became romantically involved with
Geordi LaForge. Her last posting prior to Relay Station 47 had been on
Deriben V. ("Aquiel" [TNG #139]).
-
Uhnari,
Shiana.
-
Haliian, sister of Aquiel Uhnari.
Aquiel corresponded over supspace frequently with Shiana while assigned
to Relay Station 47, in one message expressing regret she wouldn't be able
to sing the Horath at the Batarael celebration. ("Aquiel" [TNG #139]).
-
Uhura,
Nyota.
-
Terran space officer, a astrotelemetrics
and linguistics specialist. Uhura ended her career as a Captain, professor
emeritus at Starfleet Academy and senior administrator of Starfleet Intelligence.
Her previous assignments had included the starships Atlantica, Enterprise,
Enterprise-A
and Intrepid. Originating in the United States of Africa, Uhura's
name means "freedom" in Swahili. Uhura was an accomplished singer and also
a linguist, studying many different forms of communication. She was proficient
in dozens of languages, and her doctoral thesis studying fast and more
accurate translation of conflicting forms of communication helped to pave
the way for the universal translators used by the Federation a century
later. Uhura was first assigned to Kirk's command in 2264, replacing Lt.
Alden as communications chief.
She
remained associated with the vessel through two five year missions before
receiving a teaching assignment at Starfleet Academy, where she often found
herself on assignment on Enterprise's cadet training cruises. Uhura
was assigned to the starship Enterprise-A after the original was
destroyed at Genesis. She served with that vessel until its retirement
in 2293. During the Enterprise's first five-year mission, Uhura
proved herself to be a competent and capable officer to Captain Kirk and
the crew, distinguishing herself on several occasions. At one point, Uhura's
memory was erased by the Nomad probe as an attempt to instill what that
machine perceived as order on her supposedly chaotic mind.
Dr.
McCoy discovered that her original memories were simply disconnected from
her conscious mind and used a series of reassociational teaching exercises
to help her recover her mind over several weeks. ("The Corbomite Maneuver"
[TOS #2]; "The Motion Picture" [Movie #1]). Played by Nichelle Nichols.
The first name "Nyota" is not from any aired episode or film, but was originated
in the Pocket novel series and allegedly had Gene Roddenberry's approval.

charactarized by skin involutions in the temporal region of the cranium.
Barbaric until a revolution in the late 21st century, Ullians have since
developed a modern advanced culture, even though their technology lags
far behind modern standards. In the process of becoming Federation members,
the Ullians are renowned historians and are conducting a grand project
combining their historical research with their telepathic skills. They
are creating an archive of the memories of various planets. By 2368 Ullian
historians had collected the memories of 11 worlds. Their memory reading
abilites can be used to commit a form of telepathic rape, although rare,
it is dangerous and severely punished. It is an oddity that while the Ullians
can read the minds of most humanoids, telepaths of other races cannot read
Ullians. ("Violations" [TNG #112]).

-
Unificatum,
U.S.S.
-
Federation starship, Federation-class
dreadnought, Starfleet registry NCC-2102. The Unificatum was commissioned
on 16 August 2264. In the mid 2270s this vessel was refurbished with new
technology in a two year refit process. In the late 2280s the Unificatum
was assigned to patrols in subquadrant 1-north, and participated in the
military exercise 'Ga'tan Trick' along with the starships Essahir,
Springeren,
Swift
and Devonshire. (Technical Manual [TOS]; Ships of the Starfleet;
Federation Reference Series).
The 2264 date is conjectural, a modification of a 2258 commissioning proposed
in the James Dixon chronology. The dates in that reference seem to be shifted
down approximately five years in comparison with newer dating systems.

-
Military agency of the Terran

of that country's Army Air Corps. ("Tomorrow is Yesterday" [TOS]).
-
United
States of America.
-
National political entity which
existed on the planet Terra for over three hundred years. The United States
was an early experiment in democratic government, and grew to be a political
super-power during that planet's tumultuous industrial revolution. Many
later governments, both terrestrial and extra-terrestrial, have used the
precepts of liberty and freedom which the United States began. The U.S.
also originated many of that planet's early attempts at space travel, along
with their main rival, the Soviet Union. The flag of the United States
is very recognizable, with a field of stars representing each of the individual
provincial states which comprised the union, and a banner of red and white
stripes representing the original colonies which declared their independence
from tyrannical monarchies. In 2365 when the starship Enterprise-D
recovered fragments of an unidentified U.S. spacecraft, the launch date
of the vessel was determined by Data because of the fifty-two stars on
the vessel's flag, indicating it was launched between the admittance of
the fifty-second state in 2033 and the secessions of 2079. ("The Omega
Glory" [TOS #54]; "The Royale" [TNG #38]). Pictured is the 52-starred United
States flag as it appeared between the years of 2033 and 2079.

universal
translator.
-
Device used to provide real-time
two-way translation of spoken languages. The crew of Enterprise
shuttle Galileo used handheld translators specially programmed by
Spock to read the energy emissions of the being known as the Companion
while in the Gamma Canaris system. The combadges worn by Starfleet in the
24th century have this device integrated into them. Ferengi merchants and
other space travelers who did not wear combadges as a matter of course
had subcutaneous translators in their ear canal, to allow them to communicate
with other species they were dealing with. he translators seemed to be
almost flawless, failing only when they were subjected to a chroniton time
travel field in 2372. The translators on Voyager had great difficulty
in decoding the language used by the Swarm in 2373. Similar difficulties
were experienced, but eventually resolved, aboard Deep Space Nine in 2370
when translating the Skreean language. In the early day of space travel,
translation devices were not universal, and needed a trained linguist to
program them and interpret thair outputs. This is one of the reasons Captain
Archer entreated language expert Hoshi Sato to come along on the NX-01
Enterprise's
first missions. ("Metamorphosis" [TOS]; "Sanctuary" [DS9]; "Little Green
Men" [DS9; "The Swarm" [VGR]; "Broken Bow" [ENT #1&2]). Of course,
there is no good explanation of why a UT can instantly know a language's
vocabulary after only a handful of phrases are spoken. But before they
came up with the concept of a translation device, there was no explanation
on why all the aliens on Star Trek spoke English. Sometimes I guess you
just sacrifice believability for believability, because even the Enterprise
translators seem to be magic. Babel fish, anyone?.

of those present. He returned to his homeworld before Federation forces
could intervene and unknowingly brought catastrophe to his homeworld by
introducing it into the minds of all he came in contact with, effectively
rendering the planets population deaf, dumb and blind. The ensuing confusion
killed hundreds of thousands of Xoxians. Uxumel took his own life out of
guilt during this incident. ("Reality's End" [Marvel Telepathy War #1]).
